Why I Can’t Imagine Playing Colt Express Without the Big Box
As a avid board game enthusiast, I have played my fair share of games over the years. However, there are few games that have captured my attention and imagination quite like Colt Express. The unique combination of gameplay mechanics, theme, and overall experience make it a standout in my collection. That being said, I can’t imagine playing Colt Express without the Big Box expansion.
First and foremost, the Big Box adds so much variety to the base game. With 6 new characters, 5 new scenarios, and a whole new set of action cards, it feels like an entirely different game. Each character has their own unique abilities and backstory, adding to the depth and replayability of the game. The scenarios also offer new challenges and objectives, keeping the gameplay fresh and exciting.
Additionally, the components included in the Big Box are top-notch. The train cars are larger and sturdier than those in the base game, making it easier to maneuver your bandit around while also adding to the overall immersion. The plastic gems used for loot are also more satisfying to handle than cardboard tokens.
But perhaps most importantly for me personally, is how seamlessly the Big Box integrates with the base game

The box includes one main board depicting a train, six character cards with corresponding miniatures, 60 action cards, 36 loot tokens, 13 bullet tokens, six player boards, six bullet markers, two cactus tokens, one locomotive miniature with wagon tiles, one horse token with horse card deck, one stagecoach miniature with stagecoach card deck, one marshal miniature with marshal card deck and four prisoner miniatures.
The Gameplay
The aim of the game is to become the richest outlaw by robbing passengers on a moving train. Each player takes on the role of an outlaw trying to outsmart their opponents by planning their actions ahead of time while also anticipating their moves. The unpredictability of the game adds an element of excitement as players try to avoid being shot or thrown off the train by other players.
The Expansions
The three expansions included in this big box edition add new elements and challenges to the base game. Horses & Stagecoach introduces horses as a new mode of transportation along with stagecoaches that can be robbed for additional loot. Marshal & Prisoners adds a new character – Marshal – who tries to catch all outlaws while prisoners can be rescued for extra points. Ghost expansion allows players who have been eliminated from the game to return as ghosts seeking revenge on those who eliminated them.
